Am more ambivalent about "Chick Chick" than the high ranking indicates, given the social inequity underlying the song: the vocals are utterly pedestrian during the cutesy "mǔ jī mǔ jī mǔ jī mǔ jī" stuff and during the rap; the track only starts to cook when the screaming and the chicken clucking and the cackling let loose. It's then that it goes to syncopated excitement, a great visceral speed chase — really penetrates the nervous system, sorta like Bob Quine's guitar lines back in the Voidoids. But my needing to reach so far back for an example, and to guitar sounds rather than singing, leads me to this disturbing conclusion: Chickens are now more credibly penetrating than human beings are. Oh yeah, and if this list and my own viscera are representative (big "if," since they're quite possibly not, and if I'd listened to more hip-hop and rock and banda* maybe I'd know this), women are more credibly penetrating than guys are, women are more credibly tough than guys are, women are more aggressively cute than guys are, women front for rock music better than guys do, women front for heartbreak better than guys do, etc. But I've been worrying about this for years, every time I post one of these lists. And since I'm a glass-is-half-empty kind of a guy, I don't attribute this to women being good but rather to guys being lousy. And it isn't that I believe males no longer have talent, but rather that they're not finding musical models that work for them — as singers and front men, that is; when the spotlight's not on, guys are there contributing to the adventure, as instrumentalists, songwriters, dancers, impresarios, owners. Actually, the boybands are great dancers. And as for "not finding models that work for them," what's really — or merely — evident in this list is that guys are not finding models to make music that works for me. Boybands are doing fine among the fans. I'd have ranked boybands Vixx and Infinite higher if the singers had pulled off the high emotion, but the songs are gripping nonetheless.

Oh yeah, and I'm also pissed off that it's mainly young women and young men on my list (even my token trot track is by a relative youngster), but I've harangued about that before too.

I'll note that celebrated chickenphobe HyunA kicked butt this year (as well as displaying, slapping, and embracing butt (of more than one species)), and was somewhat penetrating back in 2011 deploring chickens. And that A Pony Named Olga are male human beings, not ponies.

By the way, I'm only half-joking about the credibility of chickens — not that chicken sounds are inherently credible, but if it's Wang Rong herself doing the chicken vocals — and I think it is — the chicken voice unleashes something in her that she can't do otherwise in anything close to her own voice, at least not in the several tracks of hers I've listened to on YouTube. (But, given that Wikip says she's been putting out music since the early '00s, I've hardly got an overview of her work. This one's nice enough, this one's got some interesting voice maneuverings, and on this one she sings with authority.)

*Actually, I listened to a lot of banda, every time I walked into Lowe's Mercado, but I just didn't know whom I was listening to. A lot of singers with testicles sounded quite good among the limes and piñatas.

From chicken to tiger and back

According to a comment on The Singles Jukebox, the entire point of "Chick Chick" is that "chicken" (or the Chinese word for it) is slang for prostitute.

I'm also not the only person to notice that "Chick Chick" sounds remarkably like T-ara's "Bo Peep Bo Peep" And Wang Rong's "Holiday" rips off 4minute's "Hot Issue".

Meanwhile, I learn that Time magazine has annointed Jolin Tsai's "Play" as possibly the best music video of the year. (The lyrics diss a variety of posturing twits ranging from gym rats to arthouse film hipsters and retro idol fans.)

Talking of idols, Crayon Pop will return in February with a song produced by Shinsadong Tiger. Chrome's CEO said that he was inspired to start a idol group after seeing T-ara perform "Roly Poly" -- which was produced by Shinsadong Tiger (as were those songs that Wang Rong ripped off).

Today, tierless creatures of the night Flashe turned into a four-member group and appeared on Inkigayo. (Yes, the one who's gone is Songhee.)

Turns out Flashe were also on Music Bank on Friday. According to a comment on the video, Songhee left in July for "medical reasons", which seems to be an all-purpose industry excuse. (You might remember that Jaeyoon of Chocolat left supposedly because of health reasons, but really because of a disagreement with the company.)

Re "undifferentiatedly cute", someone once suggested that, for K-Pop girlgroups, cute concepts don't really count as actual concepts, because cute is the default mode for girlgroups anyway.

And now it isn't even the most frequent mode, since butt shaking sexiness has become boringly similar across the field. To the point where old fashioned SNSD-y cuteness of Lovelyz felt fresh (helps that they sound pretty good) and a (sonically) pretty unexciting 'tough' hiphop-y concept from new group Sonamoo gets k-pop fans talking them up just because they do stand out in the current climate. I have a feeling butt shaking sexiness is on the way out also among k-pop labels, though, although EXID's late 2015 sudden success and chart re-entry of their pretty good and catchy 'Up Down' was at least sold in the media as a butt shaking sexiness success story.

Another discussion we briefly had over at ilxor is the fact that non-idol korean pop was what dominated the charts in 2014.

I should correct that to say that cute was the default mode for typical K-Pop gorilgroups. But Flashe (sorry, FlaShe) turn up the cute in the My Day MV even more than on stage.

TREN-D do have a new fifth member (the original, Elly, left). The new member is reportedly called Bona, so I suppose they're now TRBN-D. :)

I don't think they're obscure enough to be real tierless creatures, but have you come across MINX? They can sing Beyoncé's "End of Time" in close harmony and pull off fist-pumping dance moves at the same time. :)

A bit late now, but today (7th January) is Yoohyeon''s birthday, so she gets a celebratory graphic with an awkwardly-posed photo.

(There's a cooler "Happy Yoohyeon Day" graphic on the main page of MINX's fancafe.)

By the way, TREN-D have a member called Tami and MINX have a member called Dami. I wonder if they've met. :)

I think Siyeon (at 0:32) could rival Wang Rong as a credibly penetrating chicken...

<[Error: unknown template video]

(There's a translation of everything they're saying in the comments. And lots more videos where they run around acting daft.)

And in a comment to an Asian Junkie post about someone plagirising Taeyang, I came across a dismal Latin American girl rock rip-off of Bo Peep Bo Peep, plus the same group copying another T-ara song. They can't sing the melody, the drums sound like a drum machine and even the guitars sound synthetic.

nonetheless!

happy to see "Manyo Maash" and "B.B.B." so high on the list. The latter has had more sticking power than I thought it would when I first heard it.

Neon Jungle keeps juuuust missing for me, with the exception of "Trouble" -- everything else I've heard from them I want to like it and then I end up not being to take to it. I feel like Amira is being handed/writing pretty weak material. (I keep comparing them to Ladies' Code, in that I loved their debut and then felt like everything afterwards was a letdown -- "So Wonderful" and "Kiss Kiss" felt like retreads of "Pretty Pretty" -- but they've had more variety than LC.)

(I just keep mentioning LC a lot because I don't want them to be forgotten, if that makes any sense.)

Re Infinite/emotion: agreed that the guys are actually not that good at conveying emotion in song, as opposed to eye-rolling, pouting, and crying on variety shows. If you really want a mismatch between emotion and message, try B1A4: cheerful about being cheated on in "What's Happening?" or taking a page out of GLAM's book with "Solo Day."

I'm surprised "Last Romeo" made it so high; I mean, I played it a lot and I liked the extra percussion, but that was where I started feeling like Sweettune was painting by numbers; I ended up trying to a comparison to Nine Muses's "Wild" in the structure (verse A / verse B / prechorus A / prechorus B / chorus / rap / etc.) At some point I will probably end up re-creating that chart and throwing in "Glue" and "Dolls" and "The Chaser" as well (probably as soon as I want to procrastinate on school work, so, later this week, maybe). And "Dolls," "Wild," and "Gun" were all better songs than "Last Romeo".

(Revamped 9M later this month!)

I could not get through "Chick Chick." Errington may have a point about its deliberate unlistenability.

anyway my big love of the year was and remains "Red Light," which came together for me in a way "I Got a Boy" (or "I Like That," for that matter) didn't.

and now I'm listening to "Mona Lisa" and contemplating the possibility that it's a sequel to / commentary on "The Glamorous Life" and also maybe in the honorable tradition of Caetano Veloso's "Alexandre" and all this is making me happy.

Yes, the explosion into chicken sounds in "Chick Chick" is the entire selling point of the song. I like the bland verses gluing it (cheaply) together; feel like giving any more would only detract from the spotlight on the squawking.

I suppose I understand concerns about this song's complicity in "Weird Asia" (or something along those lines) but I still find it hard to pin that xenophobic trope on "Chick Chick" if only because of what an airhorn-blastingly-obvious pleasure the chicken noises are. But I suppose if you don't find chicken noises (w/ *feeling*, anyway, beyond the basic conviction required to sell 'em) funny, that won't matter. (Anyway, I don't think it's at all clear by whom or how this song was enjoyed, especially in contrast with something like "Gangnam Style," where there were huge conversations about it all over the place. So while it would be an interesting set of questions, I don't think those questions have very clear answers in this case.)

In any case, I haven't been moved by chicken noises like that since childhood, probably, or at least (to a lesser degree) Mu's "Paris Hilton," which uses chicken noises more for mise en scene.
