I dremt there are Websites devoted to pictures of cats who look like members of T-ara.* Maybe even an animated TV show where T-ara (and all other people) are cats. I'm donating items to Goodwill, and I see, in a bag next to mine, decorative eggs that are painted as T-ara cats. As my friend Mary is driving me back, I proudly tell her, "This is where I got the idea." I'm chosen to direct the movie. It is originally to be lighthearted, but I say to myself, "I'm gonna do this right." In the movie, things are going well in Catworld, T-ara performing, sometimes as a band, playing all the instruments themselves. Then an evil sorceress transforms them into new creatures: human beings. There are worries that I'm going overbudget. We run a saturation ad campaign, in the U.S. as well as Korea, playing one clip over and over:

Jiyeon: When I move my arms, they seem as if they're not my arms but someone else's. When I move my legs, they seem as if they're not my legs but someone else's.

Psychiatrist: How long have you felt this way?

Jiyeon: Always.

Strangely, this dream makes almost no reference to the recent controversy, though there is the flicker of a thought that we have to mention it in the movie: I make the quick decision to write it briefly into an early cat scene, but not as a major event.

I dremt the final scene of Sternberg's silent classic The Last Command, where the broken-down bit actor, his mind slipping, briefly and convincingly starts behaving as his former self, a great general. But in my dream version, the movie is in brilliant technicolor and directed by Vincente Minnelli. This last scene becomes a directorial tour de force in which Minnelli has Jannings, as the demented player, pull back a little of the velvet curtain separating one film production from another, disappear on the other side of the curtain onto a neighboring soundstage, return to view in a toga with four Roman legionnaires in tow, under his leadership, and then proceed to march from one soundstage to another, taking command of each movie set as he comes to it — a kind of critical commentary on each, the movie implies, but unfortunately the dream is getting vague on this, as to what sets are being taken over (think there was a scenic mountain lake, but the dream doesn't specify the further sets, or visualize them), since I'm beginning to wake up.

Back in 1983 I had a dream in which Inspector Clouseau went undercover in Nazi-occupied France disguised as a famous French surrealist. I realize that I will never again equal this, so therefore I don't post any dreams here.

At one point Clouseau in his guise as the famous Surrealist had to participate in a radio talk-show panel arranged by the Germans and their Vichy collaborators. On the street, the broadcast was played over massive loudspeakers mounted on posts tall as streetlights, which was standard for such propaganda. Among the listeners were a number of homeless and derelicts, who began to share grins and nudges with each other when Clouseau went into his spiel. They recognized immediately that it was Clouseau putting one over on the Germans; they also understood that they were the only ones who would perceive this. The soldiers and the regular population were taken in.

So, the rooms in our* house were waist deep in water, and Nietzsche - one of the people there - insisted that to be true philosophers we needed to swim underwater.
