Latest column, in which I explain why everything is everything else.

The Boney Joan Rule

Your own examples or refutations are welcome.

(I'm not back from vacation, but I did find my way to a computer, and maybe I'll succeed in doing so again soon; sorry to Dave, Nia, Kat, and Jessica for not getting a chance to respond to your most recent comments.)

Rules Of The Game #4: Britney Shows Brain

I quote [livejournal.com profile] poptasticuk, I quote Britney Spears, I mention the headshave, I use the phrase "creation myth." Comment here, there, everywhere (still don't know how consistently comments will go through on the Las Vegas Weekly site).

(Contains my answer to Jessica's question "How did you end up liking teenpop? Why don't you like what you're supposed to like?")

Apparently, LVW think "fuck" is a sacred word that cannot be spelled in full without offending the gods. Also, LVW dropped my italics, at least online, but I'll try to get them to change that.

Rules Of The Game #3: Feelings Change

Key sentence: "What's dangerous here is that feelings seem to be incontrovertible."

Comments always welcome, though attempts to post comments at the Las Vegas Weekly sometimes go through, sometimes don't, so you might want to also post any comments here that you try to make there, to ensure I see them.

Looks as if comments are going through again at the Las Vegas Weekly (or maybe whether they go through or not is unpredictable). In any event, my brother's Paris comment went up at the end of Paris Is Our Vietnam. But my guess is that comments on the previous two columns were simply lost. So still, if you make any comments, you might want to send me a copy, or also post 'em on the related livejournal thread.

Latest column:

Paris Is Our Vietnam

Comment here, there, everywhere, or email me, and I still don't know if comments are going through on the LVW site. And since they sometimes switch URLs in midweek, if this link stops working try the main site or try the Kogan links.

(I'm working my ideas up slowly, so if I haven't gotten to some of the interesting issues people have raised - e.g., Mark and private identities, Edward and ignoring other people's likes and dislikes - that doesn't mean they weren't worth raising, whether or not they never make it into the column.)

Rules of the Game #2: Metal Clusters

OK, second full column is up, brings up some things we talked about in the previous thread, about how there can be a chance element in which music you identify with socially.

(EDIT: Strangely, the link for the piece changed from the one I'd originally posted, so I've fixed it. I wonder how often this will happen. If you're looking for my pieces and the links aren't working, go to the Las Vegas Weekly main page and you'll probably see near the top something that says "Music: Rules Of The Game" followed by a subtitle, and that will be my latest column. Then, if you follow the link to the column, at the end of the column there's a link for "more articles from this author," which will take you to my previous columns.)

UPDATE: I've got all the links here now:

Here's the first ever Rules Of The Game Followup Column. Contains metal and morality, romance and longing. Quotes Martin. You're encouraged to comment here, there, everywhere.

EDIT, JUNE 8: Strangely, the link I'd posted in the previous paragraph didn't work after a few days, so I had to track down where the piece was and fix the link.

The Las Vegas Weekly wants a short footer bio from me (about 25 words). When asked for bios I generally write things like "Frank Kogan paints white stripes on black zebras, black stripes on white zebras, and black-and-white stripes on plain zebras." Or I get even more fanciful (see examples below). But I want to be more straightforward for this one; otherwise I'll come across as gauche or smirky or trying too hard. Yet I still want to have a special flair, rather than do the usual bit of "Here's where respected institutions have noticed me."

So, would appreciate any attempts on your part to write my bio for me.

Previous bios )

It would probably be a good idea to work in a plug for my book.

Hurrah, I've been given a column (first one here: The Rules Of The Game #1: Joining In) at the Las Vegas Weekly website, where I can actually get paid to write stuff I've always wanted to write - to ask questions, basically, and to intellectualize to my heart's content. The column runs every Thursday* with a brief minicolumn update on Mondays. I welcome your commentary: in fact, will need it, since my hope for the Monday minicolumns is that at least some of them will have me addressing people's comments about the previous Thursday's column.

*The especially sharp-eyed among you will notice that today is Friday, not Thursday. The Las Vegas Weekly is revamping its website and going through something of a shakedown cruise, so things don't always go up in a timely fashion. Some future Thursdays may also end up as Fridays, and some Mondays will be Tuesdays.
