The Billboard Hot 100 welcomes the New Year by adding exactly zero new songs to its top 40. (Re-entries are David Archuleta "Crush" [TICK], Paramore "Decode" [borderline TICK], and Secondhand Serenade "Fall For You" [NO TICK].) So as a special treat for steadfast, stalwart, and intrepid readers of A Year In America, we inaugurate Another Year In America by doing what [livejournal.com profile] poptimists hasn't yet found within itself the fortitude to do,* which is to look at new entries to last Sunday's U.K. charts.

50 Cent "Get Up": Ominous and catchy, snarling and seductive, in other words Fiddy doing typical Fiddyness, but it's all sounding worn out. BORDERLINE NONTICK.

The Saturdays "Issues": All dressed-up in bright colors, but this is even more wan and exhausted than the Fiddy. I wonder what motivates even Saturdays fans to download it. But why content myself with wondering, let's go to the YouTube comments: "I Love This Song, Una's Part Is The Best But OMG At Mollie's Face @ 2:25!" "This is the best song they have eva done. Dey are so pretty & hav great voices." "love the saturday's!! such a talented girl group and nice to see Frankie bak! :)"** "they have amazing voices!!! they are also so beautiful! love the song..." "Una is absolutely sensational isn't she lol. The rest of the group is is great too but Una is some beauty of the female specimens." So the answer to my query seems to be "Una." NO TICK.

Kanye West "Heartless": Liked it a lot when it showed up on Billboard, but it isn't holding up so well. The eighth notes chug along nicely enough, while Kanye hums along, murmurs along, wails along. Lyrics are a rough sketch: his suffering... all the girl's fault... reminds of those Neil Young songs I listened to in high school. Half-assed and only half-affecting, but that's still a TICK.

Shit I should do that poll.

The lack of sense involved in the Saturdays releasing 'Issues' rather than one of the actually good songs on their album is just staggering.
