Strange year. Good year, but a lot of the best songs aren't being released as singles. Vanessa Hudgens - well, to call her by her full name, Vanessa Anne Hudgens Of All People - has four of my favorite tracks, one of which is only a TV commercial, none of which have been promoted as singles. Jordan Pruitt's worst song is her single. Annie's best song isn't a single, Krystal Meyers' best song isn't a single, María Daniela's best song isn't a single, Cassie's best song isn't a single. Etc. (This would always happen in country, but that's because my sensibility isn't particularly a matchup to the country audience's. Now it's happening all over.) Also, I finally decided to disqualify Robyn's "Be Mine!" since I wanted to open the space for something that hadn't made my top 20 three years ago.
Anything through #17 would be fine as a number one; on the other hand, I can imagine finding ten singles better than "Disturbia" in the next three months; my top ten this year is joyous but hardly dominating.
Is this the year in which male vocalists finally catch up to females? Not according to this list, but you're welcome to make the case for the testicle possessors in the comments. Also, albums (to come in a few days) may tell a different story.
