Narrowing it down

My nephew Bobby reports that his girlfriend likes an '80s band sounding "much like the Dresden Dolls" whose name begins with an S, or if it doesn't begin with an S it has an S somewhere in it. We determined that it was not Supertramp.

19th-century all-wooden whalers seem remarkably cramped from the inside, having to pack in whole bunches of bunks for seamen, not to mention storage space for whale blubber. (Note to self: be sure to contrast smallness of living quarters with vastness of oceans. Speculate on whales' concept of "living quarters.")

Road to Old Mystic Seaport goes through New London, taking us past the Williams School, which is where Cassie Ventura went to high school.

Yes, strange as it seems, the band in question is definitely not Supertramp, or at least Bobby insists that it's not.

Well, the conversation was last Monday, and he is now in Arlington and I'm in Denver, but my understanding is that he thinks there's something '80sish about the Dresden Dolls and he thinks the other band was '80s ("like the Dresden Dolls") - it may be no closer than that - I'd guessed the Sex Pistols and he didn't think this was out of the question though he didn't believe it was correct - so our ideas of similarity and the '80s need to be expansive here, I think. "Male or female fronted" is something I forgot to ask. I was hung up on the letter S. (I'd email him, but his mom claims that he has over 1,000 unopened email messages.) Siouxsie doesn't seem to be out of the question, however.

On the 19th century whaling tip, have you read In the Heart of the Sea? An excellent way to learn how many calories there are in a Galapagos tortoise. Pretty harrowing non-fiction account and good summer read, too.
