Singles and Albums, 1st quarter 2008

koganbotHaven't listened to many albums, obviously (and all except Danity are inconsistent), and the singles list has several ringers from late on last year's list (and one from 2005's list) that'll drop out as soon as I'm sure they're out of the top ten for sure sure sure (sorry Miranda, you're doomed). "No More" is beautiful on the order of Cassie beauty and would be near the top if only I could convince myself the singing was better than barely adequate. María Daniela Y Su Sonido Lasser's "Duri Duri" will be song of the year if it's ever released as a single (and for all I know it has been, and it's still not as good as the Click original), unless Cassie's "Turn The Lights Off" is also released as a single.

poptimists: The Danity Kane album looks like a winner, while the María Daniela Y Su Sonido Lasser album has as many or more great songs but a lot of it struggles with María's continual tendency to go punky and shouty at the expense of the melody, and a lot of it struggles with the rhythm's tendency to go fast and punky at the expense of swing. Both of these tendencies are virtues in "Duri Duri" where they're just a tinge that makes this redo of an Italodisco classic extra exciting, and are virtues in "Dame Más" which is a controlled eruption. Maybe the tunefulness of the rest will ultimately overcome the shoutiness as I give this more listens, but a lot reminds me of Cansei De Ser Sexy shooting itself in the foot.
