16. PJ Harvey - Down By The Water

Of the ones I don't know I'm most intrigued by 4 (it implies EPIC EMOTIONZ to follow) and 12 (love-despite-oneself is a hard theme to do badly in pop) and 17. I am steadfastly unintrigued by 7.

Unfortunately, the EPIC EMOTIONZ line in 4 is sung by an Irish dork guest artist rather than by the superbabe wonderful singer who's song this mostly is... The opening to 12 really is good, and the track is by a fellow whose work you probably know - I almost want to call him "singer-songwriter dance," but I have to spend more time with his album (which I stupidly dismissed after only a few cuts)... 17 is someone whom you almost certainly don't know but the producer on it has done production and songwriting that you quite admire (though he's not one of the songwriters on this one; the actual cowriter wrote one of my favorite teenybopper faves of 2006). The first few lines go, "I ain't no queen of hearts, I go through stages/I fall in love then complicate it/Yeah, you know the feeling." Excellent.

BONUS ANSWER: 1, 7, and 3 each sound like the start of a good story. 17 intrigues me, but only after I Googled it and saw the next line -- all together, it has a good bounce to it that goes against the character being set up. (Although maybe it doesn't sound the same when actually set to music.) It's Ashlee-ish. It's Ashlee-ish even without the second line (at first I thought maybe it was one of her new songs), but the second line just seals the deal.


2, 4, 6, and 16 put me off.

I think the opening to number 6 (Hazel got it: "Marble House" by the Knife) is intriguingly perverse: "I cut your nails and comb your hair/I carry you down my stairs/I want you to see right through from the other side." The song'd be quite beautiful if it weren't for the teeth-gratingly perverse singing. I wish the Knife would content themselves to being musicians and producers and songwriters and hire someone to front the music for them. They're well-loved on poptimists, however.
