Latest column, where I collate some of the ideas I've been going on about in relation to Taylor Swift's dresses, though the piece is also about something else, something about a "conversation" zinging across time zones. I quote Kat and others. Many thanks.

The thing about dresses is, they look like you made more effort, when really they require the least effort of any piece of clothing.

Btw, my building manager says "Never heard of Taylor Swift before but, one quick look and I can tell you where to find some of those nice rags - NY's Betsy Johnson is one of the designers she wears. BJ is too cool! www.betsyjohnson.com & a store in Cherry Creek." The girls who post on Yahoo had also mentioned Betsy Johnson, who designed the dress that Taylor wore last month at her 18th birthday party. For the vids and the award shows, Taylor has her own designer, Sandi Spika, who's the wife of Scott Borchetta, the guy who started the record company, Big Machine Records, that puts out Taylor's stuff. Sandi overseees "photo shoots, videos, and the look of the albums."

My building manager (whose name is also Elizabeth, but she's not the Elizabeth who wouldn't be caught did in Bella's outfit), says that "Fifi would have dressed up for a picture." Fifi is her cat.

Well, Keenan was talking more about the ease of wearing a dress, but I mean the ease of getting dressed. Taylor probably could look just as good in jeans and a cowboy blouse, like you said, but (a) jeans read more casual than dresses, despite the fact that (b) jeans require you to pick out both jeans and a blouse, make sure the colors look all right together, make sure the fits work together, find the right shoes, pick out a belt, etc. (None of which is required when wearing a dress: you pick out the dress, you put on some shoes, you're done, and yet this is the outfit you wear when you want to look "put together.") More sartorial effort for less sartorial payoff. So in dresses, Taylor gets to look good without having to worry about looking good, which I imagine is important if you're a teenage girl going out on stage every night.

I want a tiny dog that I can dress in doll clothes and stuff in a shoe.
