heard Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark" on the radio the other day and thought of this.

Ha! Until your comment I'd never even noticed the line, "I'm sick of sittin' 'round here tryin' to write this book." I'd always liked the song on the radio, lines would jump out at me — "Can't start a fire without a spark" — assumed it was about romantic disconnection and yearning for better contact. Turns out it's about creative disconnection. I'm disappointed to learn this, actually, though I think Bruce is weaving the two together, somewhat, one as a metaphor for the other. "Wanna change my clothes, my hair, my face" seems less a makeover of self and more about changing his image, in my new reading, though obviously it's both.
