A fewer percentage of men on this list than on my albums list, even. Damn, why aren't male vocalists any good anymore? Not that you have to have a silver throat to make this list; if you're the right voice with the right song or arrangement that's enough, even if you're a generally uninspired singer. So another question might be why don't men know what to do with themselves as singers, and why don't songwriters and producers know what to do with them either?

Surely if I were listening more deeply to country and hip-hop I'd be including more male voices. But not enough to counteract this ridiculous imbalance.

Panda Bear is an Animal Collective side project? THAT EXPLAINS EVERYTHING THEN. (where everything = WHY IT'S SO APPALLING)

Why do people LIKE THAT?

"Why do people LIKE THAT?"

Actually... I don't know. I've had people try to explain Joanna Newsom to me, but it generally comes down to: They are hearing something in her voice that I simply cannot (or have not).

Ha, of all the freakfolk lot Newsom is the only one I like. Not enough to rep hard or defend her though. I don't find her voice unlistenable but also wish she would sing in a different way. I do wonder whether I wouldn't be obsessed with her if I was 14 now? But tbh despite the surface similarities I don't think she holds a candle to Tori Amos, so prob not.

I was thinking this last night (hence answering a qn on Frank's LJ 10 days late). A lot of it is Pitchfork - this 'weird' looping hippie-pop experimental weak Beach Boys nonsense is one of their real successes, the way they've taken it, not exactly mainstream but to the point where there's big critical acclaim and lots of people have heard of them. The Panda Bear I've heard is momentarily pretty and then EXCEEDINGLY BORING but I'm slightly amazed it's such a 'thing', Avey Tare & Panda Bear, who turned into Animal Collective AFAICT, surfaced around the tail end of my record shop working life I think and they were very much 'back pages of the Wire' material.

Mind you Nurse With Wound were in Smash Hits once.
