Prediction 2013: Brand New Annies

koganbotMight as well get these going, though I guess as a prediction this is pretty safe and obvious:
Taylor Swift joins Pistol Annies, who incorporate dance steps, harmonies, and raps using Bell Biv DeVoe/Backstreet Boys as template, w/ Big Bang and Danity Kane as modern analogues but Big-&-Rich tight country harmonies mixing with the R&B. Most parts are sung but brief raps are interjected and there's always a rap break prior to or as the middle eight. Rap styles are developed from each individual Annie's speaking style, as Taylor did on "Lose Yourself" — Teena Marie the model for keeping raps in the singer-songwriter ethos. Chapman-Shanks-Liddell-pop-rock-style production abandoned; Teddy Park and Shinsadong Tiger called in to produce and co-write.

Date: 2012-11-14 07:04 pm (UTC)G-Dragon of Big Bang may be the one to find about here — though I wouldn't categorize him as "like Alanis"; I could imagine his finding his way to Jagger like self-exploration, which in its time didn't generally register as "singer-songwriter" but was a kind of self-or-something-exploration nonetheless (people tend not to think of "Midnight Rambler" as self-exploration, but then people tend not to think all that much anyway).
Of course, long before Alanis, the Velvet Underground were a vehicle for noisy rock as self-exploration. But like the Stones, this didn't register as most people's idea of "singer-songwriter." In the live loud "Rhiannon" and "Edge Of Seventeen," Stevie Nicks "feminized" and went singer-songwriter with the Yardbird rave-ups that were also a good hunk of the basis of what the Velvets did. Grace Slick and Patti Smith are potential source material too, not just for a story of begats prior to Alanis and Courtney begetting Ashlee, but as possible resources for our Brand New Annies.
