Special "Glee Against The Music" edition of Yet Another Year In America, though in good and unrelated news, Far East Movement's "Like A G6" rises to number 2.
Glee Cast "Toxic": Since I didn't see the episode I don't know how Britney week works as drama, but as stand-alone music it's a deadly drip. Not surprised that the pretty-much-unknown-to-me Heather Morris is too weak for the job, but I was looking forward to how Lea Michele's showy neediness would fare on material that Britney Spears had stamped with her own needy, twisting, attention-getting chirp. Turns out Lea or someone must have decided that the neediness wouldn't work, since here it's utterly subdued, no one home, Lea pale and absent in her rendition of "...Baby One More Time." Forgettable, nothing. Where Britney's great expressive chirp penetrated walls and skin, Lea hangs back and dies. The audience must agree, since neither "...Baby" nor the Brittany/Santana tracks are in the Top 40. Instead, we get the massed choral voices hefting their weight at "Toxic," muscling up a catchy melody. The verses give us diverting glee-club silliness. Amateurish, with a bit of character. NO TICK.
Lil Wayne ft. Drake "Gonorrhea": This track sounds like someone rummaged through Wayne's fingernail clippings. "I am not a human/So I shout to all the moon men," Wayne still wandering around the same few themes: I'm outta here but I'll make you come, might kill you too. Lightweight, and Drake adds dull weight, though the song does get my attention, at least once. BORDERLINE NONTICK.
Glee Cast "The Only Exception": Would think that attempting Hayley would be less daunting, but Lea sounds just as restrained here, so gives us a pretty, mediocre rendition of a pretty, mediocre tune. I just don't see what anyone gains by trying to make Rachel Berry sound tasteful (unless such a strategy makes sense in relation to the script of this particular episode). NO TICK.
The Ready Set "Love Like Woe": A styrofoam-lite reggae beat on pop too scattered to be described as "flighty." The sound has no body, but no fizz in its vapor either. NO TICK.
So, a whiff, a clean sweep, zero ticks.
