As I'm walking into UConn to use the library's computer, the first mammal other than me that I see on campus is a skunk.

Our old dog once got herself stuck under the shed, and sprayed by the skunk that lived under there, so I got down on the ground to try and get her out, and when I looked under the shed I was face-to-face with the skunk's raised tail.

That's not a thing I ever want to do again.

This would have been the basis for an interesting scene in the Tomorrow series (if they have skunks in Australia; Wikip says a couple of skunk species live in Indonesia and the Philippines, but that all the rest are in the Americas).

IDK, it's kind of unexciting when compared with scraping together a plan to defeat the enemy that's invaded your home country, don't you think?

Well, the idea is that you're crawling under the shed yourself, either to rescue a friend or confront an enemy, or perhaps just to find refuge, when all of a sudden you're face-to-face with a skunk. Seems like a predicament Marsden would love. But I guess someone would have to invade Canada if we want this scene.
