Eminem gets help and it's enough to get him over the line. Selena's help gets in her way.
Eminem ft. Rihanna "Love The Way You Lie": Rihanna is gorgeous, Em circles around her, his words vague, the words circle around, he's going to change, it's going to change, it circles, it's not going anywhere. And Em's gift for words is gone, imagery nonexistent, we wait for Rihanna, she's the song. BORDERLINE TICK.
Eminem ft. Lil Wayne "No Love": Wayne is powerful, climbing the wall of slow dark chords, Haddaway sample is syrup and fire, "love... love... don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more... no more," Wayne weary and angry but this doesn't stop him from working idiosyncratic imagery ("Married to the game, but she broke her vows"), Eminem is adequate, got speed, got energy, but imagery and imagination are gone. Where is Kanye when you need him? Well, Haddaway returns, gets this by. BORDERLINE TICK.
Selena Gomez & The Scene "Round & Round": Lyrics have her spinning but the voice barely lifts. A trudge. Don't know what went wrong, why the track buries its star. NO TICK.
Usher "There Goes My Baby": Not exactly a sex jam. More a song of anticipation, reverie. Undeniable sweets, but how many of these do we need? BORDERLINE NONTICK.
