A couple of sincere, accurate, but incomplete and unrevealing explanations of one of my favorite songs:
(1) "I've been wanting to write a song about like being in the shadow and I always felt like I was sort of like stuck in the shadow but I think it would be cool if it was like coming out of the shadow, don't you think?"
"Right."
"Because I felt like for a while I thought I was like stuck. You know what I mean? But I think it would be cool to talk about not being stuck and about having like my own thing and not feeling like I'm in the shadow. You know? You think that's cool?"
"Not being a victim."
"Exactly!"
(2) "It took me a while to find out that I was so blessed and so lucky to have her as a sister and so lucky to find my own identity, and so this song is called 'Shadow.'"
[The first one is with John Shanks in his studio. Weirdly, it's like, she comes in with this new idea for a song, and then a cut and suddenly he's playing it and she's singing the first verse, melody and words in final form, John with the chords (though not the exact strumming he ended up using on the record). But it's the same day, same clothes. So, maybe a couple hours passed, or maybe she came in with the words written, maybe they simply pulled together a verse and the words real quickly. Did John write some of the words? Does John ever write words? I really don't know. Did Ashlee think up some of the melody? Kara ended up on the credits, too.]
[Second one is her first ever live performance - she actually botches the word order but nails the song; it's thrilling. But still, the intro - it's as if "Here's my happy song about how great everything is." (Though Mom and Dad and Jess and Nick are right there, so what's she going to say?)]
In the photo shoot she keeps wanting the clothes to be more boyish, which is interesting because really, she's such a girl. While Jess, standard feminine beauty, seems formidable, though it's hard to get a take on her.
