Jan. 28th, 2009 09:30 amAshlee Simpson: Stop Criticizing Jessica's Weight
A week after the inauguration and with such a feeling of hope in the air for our country, I find it completely embarrassing and belittling to all women to read about a woman's weight or figure as a headline on Fox News.
All women come in different shapes, sizes, and forms and just because you're a celebrity, there shouldn't be a different standard. Is this something you would say to your wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, or even a friend? I seriously doubt it.
How can we expect teenage girls to love and respect themselves in an environment where we criticize a size 2 figure? Now can we focus on the things that really matter?
But the second Ashlee got her nose job she lost all credibility on this subject. Or she didn't lose credibility with the nose job itself, but by subsequently ducking all questions about the nose job,* some of which I recall being focused and articulate and completely relevant, along the lines of "You said in Marie Claire that women come in all shapes and sizes and need to accept themselves but there you were on the cover with your new nose, which seemed to contradict what you were saying inside." Given that people do focus on looks and physical standards and such and that she and her sister have benefited commercially from those standards, "just because you're a celebrity..." hardly addresses the issue.
But nonetheless I do think there's something lovable about her making this statement, credible or not.
*Well, she finally acknowledged it in an interview w/ Us Weekly last year; actually she could be speaking about it a lot now for all I know, since I didn't even know she had a blog (unless it's her MySpace, which she didn't seem to be hands-on with several years ago, so I hardly ever look), and maybe she's now thinking hard and writing eloquently on the subject, but she sure wasn't back when the news (and the nose) was hot.
