Another Year In America October 8, 2009
Oct. 8th, 2009 01:05 pmPeas finally fall, replaced by pleasant nonentity Jay Sean, who's good news for ethnic diversity, even if his song isn't much more than passably tuneful. (In fact, I have to ride the chart down to 6 ["Paparrazi"] and 7 ["You Belong With Me"] before starting to feel enthusiasm.)
Iyaz "Replay": Another island singer joins the AutoTune sugar rush, this track slightly catchier than average, but I feel swamped in piffle when I listen. BORDERLINE NONTICK.
Glee Cast "Somebody To Love": Has nothing like the sensitivity, restraint, and nuance of the Queen original. Also missing humor, joy, and excitement, if you go for that in your morning workout. NO TICK.
Black Eyed Peas "Meet Me Halfway": Been avoiding this since first listen, thinking that ole Black Eyes had finally laid an egg. But hearing it next to the competition, I notice the Peas really know how to push a chorus, have a sense of sound, make sure that what's distinctive in a voice gets heard, think of beats as varieties of timbre, basses as varieties of boings and hums. TICK.
David Guetta f. Akon "Sexy Bitch": Same with Guetta, the man who gave "I Gotta Feeling" its beats; here he runs synths and cheeps up the mountain, finds the pop in pop, and makes Akon actually sound fun wrapping his fat mouth 'round a big hook. TICK.
Chris Young "Gettin' You Home (The Black Dress Song)": He takes her out so she can show herself off, but he can't wait to get her home, and she can't wait to be gotten. Rich comforting voice, standard country, solid. BORDERLINE TICK.
