I have the same initial reaction to Allison Iraheta's "Friday I'll Be Over U" that I had to Kelly Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck Without You," which is to say I waver between "irresistible" and "please shut up."

Does Max still have the knack?

Since Max Martin keeps scoring hits it's probably wrong to say, "The guy seems no longer to know what he's doing," but here the song's being loud seems not just gratuitous but distracting. I'm listening to the Knack's "My Sharona," a good template for how to go loud with prettiness (Slade and Sweet and Nirvana and New York Dolls would be others), and there's plenty of volume in it but the volume is used for effect, built up around the rhythm, whereas here it's "we're at the chorus, so build it all up with guitars and drums." And now I'm listening to the Max'n'Luke'n'Cathy'n'Katy "I Kissed A Girl," which I think works better than this. It was produced by Luke rather than Martin, and I'd say it's halfway between this and the Knack in that in the chorus the guitars and drums and singing seem integrated, whereas in the verses the singing and guitars seem as if they could barely be bothered with what the drums are doing.

Hey Frank, I haven't heard the song you linked to above (will try to check it out), but I'd be curious what you think of Selena Gomez & the Scene's new Kiss & Tell album -- easily the best teen-pop-rock I've heard this year, possible year-end top ten candidate for me, and I really wasn't expecting to make it through the thing once, even though I liked Selena's contributions to last year's Another Cinderella Story soundtrack okay. They really didn't prepare me for this, though. After three listens, favorite songs so far (which could change) are opener "Kiss & Tell" (a real raver), "As A Blonde, "and "Stop & Erase." The first and third of which were partly written by Gina Schock from the Go-Gos (which tells you what sound the album's basically going for); second of which partly written by Fefe Dobson.

Was going to ask if "As a Blonde" was Fefe's song, and I assume it is [listening now, and yeah...she does a pretty good Fefe impression!]. Wish that the new Fefe stuff would sound a bit more like what she does with Disney stars...

Had no idea that there was a Selena Gomez Kiss & Tell album, and I wouldn't have had high hopes based on Another Cinderella Story either (I think I liked one of the songs by one of the minor characters and that was it).

I will go find out.

Have you by any chance heard an advance of the Dobson alb? Jordin Sparks' version of Fefe's "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" is a lot better than Jordin's version of "Let The Music Play."

So far my favorite power-pop/neo wave single this year is Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles' "Do It For Free"; they're generally alt country enough that this could make my country ten.

Semi-related, here's Kelly Clarkson doing a pretty cool "Seven Nation Army"...I like when she sings along to the riff, generally enjoy the flights she takes from the otherwise straightforward melody. At this point I'd rather her work with Jack White than Max Martin.

Dear Max - Please stop making rock songs. Especially, please stop using loud guitars. Maybe you can use acoustic guitars, if you use them like a skiffle instrument. Instead of an electric bass, use a string and a pole attached to an overturned washtub. Or use a jew's harp. Drummers should use brushes. If you want to sample some disco or funk rhythms, that'd be OK, too. Sincerely, your friend Frank.
