Carrie Underwood "Cowboy Casanova": Strong voice confronts a strong bass; the bass calls on fiddles, drums, and guitars for support, but the voice stands firm. Lots of power, almost metal strength, but within this power song and dance have trouble making a mark. NO TICK.
Owl City "Fireflies": The music here is scared of it's prettiness, undermining it with piano blips and breathy, self-deprecating singing. Finally commits itself to a lovely swelling chorus that's actually only half lovely. Fear. NO TICK.
Lady Antebellum "Need You Now": Now this is it, late night lonely mush, reaching for the phone. A nice full space that's filled with warmth and longing. TICK.
