I am embarrassed that I had to find out about this guy through the New York Times (rather than getting the tip from livejournal). The clip is more than a year old, but this and subsequent Web achievements may potentially give this stockroom Tajik a musical career, though that's hardly certain. He's better than Susan Boyle, but probably less marketable. "He hopes to position Mr. Allaberiyev as a 'world music' star, leaving behind Bollywood imitations for a repertory of Afghan and Central Asian folk songs." That doesn't sound promising, though who knows until one's heard it. And since it's hard to see him being marketed as any more than a novelty if he stays Bollywood, "world music" may be the only shot he's got.
