Jamelia's "Money" jumps interesting hurdles, doesn't soar. Baxendale's "Music For Girls" is an essay on what it's like to be a guy who makes dance pop (i.e., music for girls), is too obvious in a Calvin Harris way but sadly pretty in a Neil Tennant way. Thumbs up, I think. DJ Luck "Masterblaster 2000" is garage-soul that aspires to disco. Another thumb up. Alizee's "Moi... Lolita" will for sure get one of my ten ticks, swoony, seductive, and probably risqué and literary in that bullshit French way, but fortunately I can't understand the words. Photek's "Mine To Give" is an anxious stroll through a deadly minefield, could be a contender. Green Day's "Minority" and Powderfinger's "My Happiness" are serviceable pop rockers, Artful Dodger's "Movin' Too Fast" is better than serviceable whatever it is (underground garage? split-level garage? skyscraper garage?). Tok Tok's "Missie Queen's Gonna Die" has a hard bitch talking in front of obsessive electro beats, is serviceably bitchy. Dur dur d'être bitchy.
Of the ones I have heard, 3LW's "More Than Friends" tries to use the Fearless Four's "Rockin' It" as the basis of an r&b teenpop girlgroup song, sweet amidst cavernous beats. It still seems odd to me, girls lost in a pit. Kelis's "Mars" is riveting but it doesn't make me feel a lot, Madonna's "Music" is catchy but also pales as feeling. Pink's "Most Girls," which I nominated, is probably as good as I remember, but I haven't refreshed my memory, and "There You Go" will arise amongst the T's to surpass it.
