In case you haven't been rechecking it, the comment thread to Moggy's McFly post has become a nice little gathering of McFly fans. (Also, if you haven't read the post yet, it's an excellent piece of social criticism, and I especially recommend the paragraph where she talks about her "very, very brilliant" friend (though I disagree with the part where she claims that the friend is a much better music writer than she is).)

I was upset to see that the editor not only cut all of her commentary but also put up a patronizing "explanation" of the interview.

Frankly the best interviews I've ever done have been through email. This is mainly because poor responses tend to happen not because the interviewer's questions are no good, but because for whatever reason the subject him/herself is giving inexpressive or purely functional answers (I read a particularly painful interview with Bob Dylan c. 1968 with Jann Wenner the other day and it struck me just awkward the conversation itself must have been. Bob clearly not into it at ALL, basically dismissed every question as being either boring or obvious.)

Then again I usually have little use for "functional" interviews ("what's the tour gonna be like?" "How's that new bassist working out?" "How was Mongolia?") anyway -- in my experience they turn out better the farther away you can get from Subject Matter. Though I do remember doing an awesome in-person interview with some guy talking about the Malaysian Multimedia Supercorridor (come to think of it, that's the only time I've directly transcribed a long interview), so you never know.
