Well this is like my ninth layout.

I'm struggling with this one, but on a quick look-through none of the other layouts they offer seem likely to be better. Does one have to know CSS to get a good layout?

(They say that in this layout I can change the order of the elements in the sidebar, but I've yet to see how. I would rather Taylor were on the top and the tags at the bottom, though I suppose you would say that this is a reason to be grateful for the layout's inflexibility.)

There are people who write & distribute custom CSS code; you can use the CSS exactly as they wrote it, or tweak the code & "Customize Your Theme" options to get exactly what you want. For example, I used this as the template for my current layout.

You should be able to change the order. What element did you put Taylor in -- the blurb? Go to Customize Your Theme > Sidebar > Ordering and change the order so that the blurb (or whatever you used to get Taylor on there) is on top.

"Ordering" doesn't seem to exist as an option. My theme is Minimalism: Crimson Valley. Under "Customizable Sidebar Contents" for a list of layouts that includes "Minimalism" lj says: "Except for Disjointed and Refried Paper, these layouts also allow you to change the order of modules in the sidebar." I think lj is lying.
