As the thrilling fall retail season moves into gear, two new releases hit the top 40, and all of four - yes, 4! - other singles rose or fell by more than five spots. Or to say this another way, 34 singles in the Top 40 moved five or fewer places. Moribund.
Taylor Swift "Fearless": The sound is bright and ringing, her voice trembles while her spirit stays firm, she's fetching and all, the usual Taylor, though the mood is too even in comparison to what she did on her first album. A tick, but I'm thinking that these days she's more her vibrant Taylor self on YouTube and MySpace, petting snakes, lip synching Katy, and being shunned by her cat. TICK.
Zac Brown Band "Chicken Fried": The beat's an OK half jog, and the vocals are dull and mannered casualness that aims for restraint while still tripping over the furniture. The word "band" is becoming a sure sign of stodginess. NO TICK.
T-Pain f. Chris Brown "Freeze": Who is T-Pain? I mean, I've heard him on scores upon scores of songs but who is he? NO TICK.
