why have they re-recorded it with Neneh and Annie tho? i mean, they're both GREAT but i can't imagine them doing a better job on this than Paola's original super-great treatment. just doesn't seem like the right kind of song for them. i must listen and see for myself tho...thanks for the tip.
Well, the Annie version might be because Annie's a Pitchfork star. I've never heard the original, but Neneh's version actually works beautifully; the vocals are deliberately washed-out and pale, however, so if you heard it you wouldn't say to yourself, "That's Neneh." (I was so tired last night when I listened to the Annie version that I don't remember it.)
May I send you the proper original great version? These are just useless in comparison, as much as I like Annie and Neneh separately. In fact, nothing I've heard of the US release so far is anywhere near the standard of their Swedish releases or the Torgny Melins covers.
Jessica, I'd love it. edcasual at earthlink dot net.
(I like the Neneh Cherry version far more than the Annie; the way they washed-out Neneh's vocals actually sounds very sweet and mysterious; Annie's vocals seem wrong, though I haven't put my finger on just what's wrong. It's a great song, though, so I'd like to hear a great version. The U.S. album is mediocre.)
Don't you read Poptimists? Torgny melins are a slightly aging Swedish schlager (traditional pop loved by grannies - like old-skool Eurovision) band who are known for covering current pop songs in their schlager style. Their last album was entirely made up of Teddybears Sthlm covers and it was really quite brilliant. They also covered Moneybrother, Robyn, Laleh and September, among others, at an awards show last year - I'll find the YouTube link later.
