Still not done with 2021, which probably doesn't surprise you if you're aware that I haven't yet posted my final lists for 2018 or 2019 or 2020 either. Been knocking about a couple people's Uproxx ballots, Marko Orlic's and Patrick Lyons's, 'cause they both voted Playboi Carti's Whole Lotta Red and I'm looking for more low-rent or murky hip-hop. Lyons steered me towards Zelooperz, whose clattering "Mechanic" got on my latest Eardrums playlist. And so far I've gotten to Dean Blunt and Tirzah off of Orlic's; they're pulling me into their quicksand, even if how much I like it is in process; they should at the very least help to crud up a future Eardrum.

Dean Blunt Black Metal 2: Despite the title, it's not metal – more like Soundcloud rap that's even more sludgy and dirt-scratched than usual – except it turns out he's actually a Brit artsy guy, been around for a while. This doesn't change the musical effect though I suppose changes the sociology from 'hood dirt to... not sure, boho silt? (Is the phrase "boho" an anachronism? And which flavors of art and bohemia am I talking about anyway? I really don't know Britain... And 'hoods do sometimes draw from bohemia, though it's usually the other way around. I think.)

Tirzah Colourgrade: Blunt helped on one track of the Tirzah album, and she definitely falls on the artsy side of the barstool. So her slow mud is more sculptural; but still effective. She made the Pitchfork and the Guardian top album lists.
