The "I invented emo" thing is largely a joke, but not too far from reality -- Rites of Spring and Embrace certainly came first, but to the extent that Hated added hefty doses of Husker Du-esque "wah-ho" vocalization and post-folky guitar playing -- not to mention my too-clever bass playing -- to the (sonically speaking) fairly standard harDCore of those bands, we certainly (and unwittingly) set up a template that too many followed later.
