Mat embedded this BoA rehearsal in one of the K-pop threads, and I don't want it to go unnoticed, since BoA's got something amazing as a dancer: her whole demeanor, a completely flexible confidence, a casual command of space and an elastic joy that's capable of owning every cubic centimeter in a room, should she find her way to it.

I've never gotten BoA as a singer; I run into my Keri Hilson problem, an absence in the middle. The tracks seemed to be waiting for their Cassie, or Britney, or someone, a missing ache or neediness that needed to seep into the music. But I've heard little, so now with my eyes opened maybe my ears will follow.

Speaking of waiting for my Britney, here's what could be the Korean equivalent of the Lonely Island, or of the wild and crazy guys, perhaps. It's "GG," comprising G-Dragon (of Big Bang) & comedian Park Myung Soo, "Having An Affair," from Infinity Challenge, which according to Mat is a show where unlikely combinations of musicians and entertainers come together and create a track. The routine starts off mildly funny, with a fairly good electro squiggle in the rhythm; then, as "guest artist," Park Bom of 2NE1 comes on, and she totally pwns it, does an ace Britney, if slightly generic.

Yes, BoA was always about joy and confidence and an effortless, almost tomboyish cool. Her videos circa "Valenti", when she was really huge, were simple compared to what Utada Hikaru et al were doing. She also wore trousers a lot.

Gaon has an article about the GG/Bom appearance. Google translate tells me this:

OK, I'm gathering from this other clip (about a month earlier) that they'd envisioned a character "Spring" who would appear in the middle of the song. But they never said who "Spring" would be, that it was going to be Bom. That was classified information. (Also, it sounds as if it's T.O.P. singing Park Myung Soo's part in the demo that G-Dragon is introducing Park Myung Soo to.)

I keep getting a kick out of this, and now think the basic routine is way better than "mildly funny." But Bom still pwns everybody.

Tracking the musical career of Dylan-lookalike Park Myung Soo: Since 2005 consisting solely of novelty-leaning singles with actual performers - the aforementioned Naengmyun w/ Jessica, from the same show, will be covered by 2NE1 for their upcoming Korean concerts, according to the setlists. The next summer he and E-tribe blatantly tried to copy the success of that song roping in Nicole from KARA: Whale. Working with Gil from Leessang it's MyungSoo who delivers the soaring chorus, although he has to lean on autotune to make it.
