SNSD's "Hoot," Sooyoung's two brief parts spliced together from a large number of live performances. Unfortunately, the idea here is "Listen to how this crazy obsessed fangirl shows up and screams every time Sooyoung sings her part"; whereas what I'm getting from this is, "If you'd spliced this to run rhythmically you'd have created an amazing track!"

The original "Hoot" is pretty good, but has too many hooks and ideas to gather momentum. Whereas this bit alone just pushes and pushes, grabs and grabs. Someone's got to use this as the idea for a remix, follow the musical logic.

(For the time being I have no access to computers with sound, which may have an impact on how I participate in these conversations. Sorry that for the time being I'm not joining many other people's convos.)

(Not x-posting on [livejournal.com profile] poptimists this week, mainly 'cause I won't have time to check it.)

I don't know what they should cut, but yep, 'Hoot' could do with being turned into a more single-minded assault... like their great 'Genie'.

There's an active crowd of k-pop remixers out there, but I couldn't find any Hoot mix which approached this idea.

Ahh, thank you for putting your finger on what bothered me about "Hoot"! Seriously, I don't know how it took me this long to realize that.

Actually what bothers me the most about this song is its middle eight, and I think that's generally the part I dislike most in a K-pop song. It's often used for the ladies as an excuse to insert some soft/girly moments, no matter how strident the rest of the song is, and though sometimes it works (as in "Gee"), a lot of the time the tempo change is too abrupt for me - like it is here, even though it's being used for flavour, not as an excuse to shoot soft-focus close-ups. It took me a long time to warm up to "BANG!"'s middle eight, even with Bekah's rapping.
