K-pop people: What's happening in this DJ DOC video? They're obviously parodying a whole bunch of popular Korean groups, but I'm hardly one to understand the nuances, or even the broad sweeps; 'cept obviously at one point they're doing a goof on After School's "Bang!," which is my Korean track of the year, though this DJ DOC one - "I'm A Guy Like This" - is pretty damn good itself, and shows a pronounced Cuban/Cuban American tinge. According to kpoplive.com, also being ribbed here are Lee Hyori, CN Blue, and Big Bang, the last two I don't know anything about.

And what's happening in this stage presentation, with the dancing girls and the (I assume) traditionalist instrument?

Also, a discussion of the significance of DJ DOC would help, as I gather they were important in the Korean hip-hop '90s, their new record being their first in seven years.

Also, how would you translate the name of their album, 풍류? Google translate gives me "Elegance," but I've also seen the album called "Appreciation."

Well, the woman who's playing the kayageum in the bottom one is Lee Ha-neui a.k.a. Honey Lee, former Miss Korea: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Ha-nui

It sort of makes sense to have a bit of a cultural marker there because one of their rap sequences repeats over again, "I'm a Korean guy," but it seemed pretty random to me too. I'm guessing the real reason is that the performance was for the Asian Music Awards in Macao according to this article where Honey Lee was a guest: http://article.joinsmsn.com/news/article/article.asp?total_id=4720392&ctg=1503

I can't really comment on the nuances of the references in their official MV, but I think it's funny that they spend the entire MV parodying other bands in a song that's all about "This is who I am, what are you going to do about it?" The words are very much about them asserting their uniqueness.

Also, when they don the indie rock stance they're CN Blue, a pretty limp guitar pop band where the vocalist, Yonghwa, is currently participating in a 'fake marriage' reality show with Seohyun of SNSD - probably the oddest and most fascinating of Korean celebrity TV.

Big Bang has been my favorite k-pop boy band from the start. They're part of the YG Family with 2NE1 and share some of the same qualities (and producer(s), although they do quite a lot of that themselves).

I enjoy this new YDG single quite a lot. His style lies somewhere between Waka Flocka and Soulja Boy - so much suppressed energy that he only knows to let it out through grunts and mumbles.

Wow. Don't know what I think about the vocals. They're almost hypothetical, unrealized. Don't think I've heard anything like it. His movements are impressive, as you say, somewhere between suppressed and released.
