Promo Listening Experiment Day 7
Jun. 18th, 2008 11:46 pmCalico Horse "Happy Placebo Syringe Day": The song title is impossibly clever, isn't it? This is like singing "Happy Birthday" or "Merry Christmas" or something, except it's Placebo Syringe Day, not Christmas. The singing is annoyingly arch, in a blankly postpunk manner. Deadpan humor. If it is humor. Normal-voiced girly singing that fakes you out by starting as a round (like "Frere Jacques" is a round) but then arriving at harmony. "We lay side by side in wooden boxes." The lyrics seem to be snippets from a pair of lives, starting in childhood, ending in death. This would be half pretty if (a) the song had a pretty melody, and (b) the singers weren't so deadpan and normal. Which is to say I have nothing in principle against intricate arrangements with false rounds and wandering guitars. This is not ending in a tick, however.
