Another thought, maybe a strange comparison in that the connection is just that the two of them were interviewed on TV, but...

Consider, when she was faced with the most important interview of her life, how much more thought Rihanna gave to who she was and what she was about, and what her responsibilities as a public figure were, than Sarah Palin did when she was faced with the most important interview of her life thirteen-and-a-half months ago.

Watching this now. Would like to have a transcript of the whole thing, actually, as there's SO MUCH to quote from. (Selfishly(?) the first thing I ask is why doesn't this person come through in more of her music? Not the subject matter, but the vibrant, amazing person here. She's like the inverse Ashlee Simpson or something.)

Well, here's Rihanna interviewed by the Associated Press: [Rated R] was about me, and so much so that songs got really personal to the point where it took three months for me to start recording it because it was too deep for me to even listen to.

I feel like my fans, they knew me, they knew what I looked like, but they didn't really know what my personality was. They didn't really know how I think or what I stand for. They didn't really know much about me as a person. They just knew my image and the idea of me.

But I wanted to give them more of who I really was because I feel like that was a connection I was missing.

(We'll see if vibrant/awesome is what she thinks she is, and whether that's what gets into the music.)

The recording experience was different because it was from a completely new mind space, from a different perspective. Usually I was thinking of fun stories, things to talk about, different topics that might be cool, but this time is really about my life

The danger here is that if she's steered the album towards "darkness" and "not fun" and "not cool" - if that's where she's headed - the darkness may not be potent, no matter what her feelings or her life are truly like. Darkness being the expected expression, given what happened to her, it might no longer have aesthetic impact, unless she can find a way to make it idiosyncratic and novel and surprising.
