Willow codes as "brain," not "nerd" (though I wouldn't be able to specify the distance right now). In any event, library girls can definitely cross to cool (or could in Storrs, Connecticut in 1971); or anyway, freaks and cool kids could hang with/get hung up on library girls (though in Storrs it helped that she was one of the most beautiful girls in the school). Willow is simply too nice to be cool, however. But that doesn't mean the cool kids wouldn't appreciate her.

But really, what I'm trying to get at is a better way for the show to make sense of Cordy-Xander: Xander as a figure with sociocultural force, which would naturally draw Cordelia, no matter their conflicting social markers. (Right now Xander's social force is strictly personal, even if it's directed at the (barely even drawn) social world around him.)

Vampires don't yet have a sociologically presence in Sunnydale, even if they do a bit in the show. Next two episodes start to sketch how that can change, of course.
