The attractive black woman who's giving me occupational therapy for my shoulder told me that during her divorce she was so upset by romantic music that she couldn't even listen to Ray Charles. Not even Ray.

She likes jazz. She'd never heard of The-Dream, had not heard of "Umbrella." I tried to explain The-Dream to her, how he'd be cocky and the music would be romantic sexmush but then little things within the mush would become uneasy and suddenly halfway into the album the beats come in violent, and then it's song after song of floating two-chorders and no choruses and the cockiness and the romance are trying to reestablish themselves while the relationship is working out its arrangements and its quid pro quos, and the beauty is surrounded by analysis and is spinning around a central discomfort, but it's also a bit funny.

I also tried to explain Boney M to her, the group I was listening to back during my divorce.
