While "Boom Boom Pow"'s electro strangeness holds its grip on the top spot, an electro-hip-hop sk8er crossover genre crashes the Top 40 for the first time. Holy flash, the new is actually new, even if it cops moves from old futurism.

New Boyz "You're A Jerk": Jerkin' seems to be L.A.'s answer to hyphy. On this track, the chipmunked "you're a jerk" may come across as a joke novelty for the first fifteen seconds but then continues so insistently that it's as twisted and otherworldly as the cavernous bass and the eerie deep-night synth. I think this is major stuff, and thanks to LJ I knew about it a whole two-and-a-half weeks ago (scroll down to this and the track by the Bangz, jerkin' going r&b)! YOU'RE A TICK.

Billy Currington "People Are Crazy": Young guy in bar meets old guy to a two-step that's as comfortable and familiar as a scruffy, beloved jacket. "We talked about God's grace and raisin' hell" and a bunch of other comfortable, familiar things. There's a twist at the end that's goofy and funny but has a barb in it, when you think about it, suggests that for the old guy the seemingly comfortable and familiar had been hard to find. TICK.
