A star glistens typically, a couple of country acts straddle the borderline, and there's a dead man walking.
Kelly Clarkson "I Do Not Hook Up": Kelly's on board a sleek machine, which drowns out loads of her personality, leaving barely enough. Pretty good ride, though, so it's a TICK.
Brad Paisley "Then": Pleasant, gentle voice, nice combination of dripping steel and shimmering chords, but nothing steps up to demand attention. BORDERLINE NONTICK.
Eminem "3am": The rhymes come so quick and tight as to feel like a mechanism, and Eminem is trapped. He sounds like the walking dead - which may be the point but that doesn't make this good. NO TICK.
Sugarland "It Happens": Rhymes and rhythms are just as tight as Eminem's, but Jennifer sounds like she likes them, each a mini-trampoline for her voice. She's got the same bounce all through, however, which cancels a lot of the impact. BORDERLINE TICK.
