Xuxa robbed in 1992 Voice poll

Xuxa's "Chindolelé" (or "Tindolelé"; I've seen it spelled both ways), was actually one of my top favorites of 1992, but I didn't know if it was a single or not, or from that year, so I didn't put it in my Pazz & Jop ballot. It's an exuberant kids' song where the exuberance isn't forced on you but just wells up from within the music. Kids' voices often don't work for me in songs, either 'cause they're used for sentimentality or 'cause the basic nonmusicality of massed not-really-in-tune voices pours dirt over the melody. This one, though, the kids are right in there calling back in answer to the jingle in a massive bubble of delight and NOISE, and it's great.

haha yes I remember this from when I were a kid but I have no recollection of this clip!

(btw, Xuxa was a kid's presenter - she used to start the show by coming down from her spaceship, just like in a parliament/funskadelic show..it was only years later, seeing it in a George Clinton segment in a music doc that I went: 'oh so that's where Xuxa (or whoever dreamt this up) got it from'.)

This is great. I only remember marveling at how someone could have a pronouncable name that looked like that. I did a post on Tatiana a while back, Mexican kid's show host/pop star. (I'm referring to this, btw: "In 1993 Xuxa hosted an English language series in the United States, "Xuxa", but it did not achieve the popularity Xuxa had enjoyed throughout Latin America and Spain.")

Btw, online dictionaries don't recognize the word chindolele or tindolelê as either Spanish or Portuguese. Also, I'm figuring, based on the fairly unclear Wikipedia article, that the song was released in 1988 or so in Brazil, maybe later in the rest of Latin America.

Haven't spoken Portuguese (or any Spanish) for years but the title sounds like a kind of Brazilian slang of which there is no english (or even Spanish or Portugual-Portuguese) equivalent to.

Here's a lo-fi clip of her doing the song in English and wearing too much clothing. I doubt that she translates the term so much as simply replaces the old words with new ones and then uses the term itself at the end untranslated.

Before seeing the lo-fi clip and after my 2nd post here I thought, bcz of the -olele bit, that it could be she is reducing a child's name to call him affectionately.

Catching what i could of the english translation ('funny little game' 'hands in the air') maybe it could be she is calling a name (I want to see yr hands) but er..Chindo?

Just thinking I might have (or saw my brother) dance to this in someone's bday party a very long time ago. It makes sense that it's from the late 80s, by '92 I now disctinctly remember kids at school talking about Nirvana (or metal bands). I didn't care for music so much then as I was playing sports (football and table tennis and handball).

"El Chango Marango" is sort of in a Mexican reggaeton stylee, actually, if you take the accordion lines as making it Mexican. The drums are doing reggaeton. "La Ranita" seems Tex-Mex (if I'm using that term correctly). Tatiana doesn't have remotely the rush and ra-ra of Xuxa's best, however.
