Yet Another Year In America December 2, 2010

The retail season continues uneventful as far as the singles chart is concerned, with only two new non–Glee-ers .

Enrique Iglesias ft.Ludacris & DJ Frank E. "Tonight (I'm Lovin You)": Strange that the gleam of Autotune should be what returns this guy to the American charts, given that his voice contained sweet starbursts all along. And equally strange, the electronic sweetness reduces the risk of his being cloying. TICK.

Glee Cast "Marry You": Has a nice Christmas-y arrangement, and it highlights the vocals more effectively than the Bruno Mars original did. And it's got Lea, and therefore emotion. Not enough Lea, and not enough emotion, but still lightly listenable. BORDERLINE TICK.

Dr. Dre ft. Snoop Dogg & Akon "Kush": Sounds more like syrup than like weed; with Dre's deep bellow, the whole thing's too sluggish. NO TICK.

Glee Cast "Just The Way You Are": Cory is restrained and gentle on this cover of a Bruno Mars cloyer. Unfortunately he's too weak to carry the song once the instruments become more numerous and the background singers arrive. NO TICK.

The Secret Word of the Week

Sounds like this week's secret word was SYRUP. (Cloying, Christmas, sizzurp, cloyer.)

Yep, Winehouse -- she was "drenched" in something or other. I like that syrup appears so much around Christmas time. I think each week should have a secret theme.
