Another reason is that the editor, Mary Gaitskill, has a strong feel for how music lives in the life of the culture. See her excellent novel Veronica, for instance. (And I still treasure her Radio On review of "Plush" by the Stone Temple Pilots: "What stands out to me is the line, 'When the dogs begin to smell her.' Are they talking about somebody's cunt or what?") A disadvantage might be that she isn't hooked into the rock-critic world. For better or worse Da Capo tends to pick editors for this series who are literary types who like music rather than music critics themselves, which means the choice of pieces drifts towards what will appeal to literary intellectuals.
