I might if I ever get around to challenging Luc Sante's reply tweet regarding Marty Balin ("Best male rock singer of that era, by a long way"). I'd probably put Marty above Van, but not by a long way (anyway for Marty era (1966-70) I'd put Jagger above all others including Marty, and by a long way).
Btw, the "Beside You" that I put on Crushed Bridges isn't the Astral Weeks version but one from T.B. Sheets, a '70s compilation of tracks from his Bang Records years; it's probably from 1967.
