empirical claim (dispute or disprove?):

it's my sense that on the internet, where communities gather by elective affinity, a great deal of rage and mutual resentment is stoked by community A's assumptions about the generalised reasons behind community B's affinities (ie "we" came together as a wide-ranging bunch of freethinking friends, to explore interesting ideas; "they" band together in confused and deluded panic round the fetishised ephemera that keep them from seeing themselves as they are)
